Frequently Asked Questions

An Extended Kayak Instruction Expedition with Rapid Runner Expeditions is an in-depth, multi-day kayaking experience designed for those looking to seriously improve their kayaking skills, explore remote rivers, and take on more challenging water conditions. These expeditions combine comprehensive kayaking instruction with real-world experience on some of Nepal’s most beautiful and exciting rivers. Over several days, you will learn advanced kayaking techniques, enhance your safety skills, and gain hands-on experience with varying river conditions. The expedition provides a deeper understanding of kayaking while allowing you to test your abilities in a supportive and educational environment.

Extended Kayak Instruction Expeditions are suitable for individuals who already have basic kayaking experience and are looking to take their skills to the next level. These expeditions are designed for intermediate kayakers who want to refine their technique, learn more advanced paddling maneuvers, and gain experience on Class III and Class IV rapids. Participants should be in good physical condition and comfortable with the basics of kayaking, including basic paddling strokes, reading the river, and self-rescue techniques. The minimum age requirement is generally around 16 years old, though this may vary depending on the individual’s comfort level and prior experience.

During the Extended Kayak Instruction Expedition, you will focus on improving and mastering a wide range of kayaking skills. Key lessons include:

Advanced paddling techniques: Refining strokes for precision and control, including techniques for navigating strong currents and handling complex river features.

River reading and navigation: Learning how to assess water flow, read rapids, and choose the best line for safe and effective kayaking.

Rescue and safety: Mastering self-rescue and group rescues, along with how to handle unexpected river situations and difficult conditions.

White-water techniques: Gaining experience on more challenging Class III and Class IV rapids, working on skills like edging, bracing, and high-stakes maneuvering.

Eskimo rolls and advanced recovery techniques: Learning how to perform the Eskimo roll (a technique to right your kayak after capsizing) and other advanced recovery techniques to increase your confidence and safety on the water.

Managing stress and fear: Developing mental resilience and learning how to manage fear and stress when facing more difficult rapids.

These expeditions offer a combination of classroom instruction, in-water practice, and feedback from professional kayak instructors. By the end of the course, you'll have the skills and confidence to tackle a wider range of river conditions and improve your kayaking proficiency.

An Extended Kayak Instruction Expedition typically lasts between 5 to 14 days, depending on the specific itinerary and the skills you wish to focus on. Shorter expeditions (5-7 days) are ideal for those with limited time who want to improve their skills in a focused manner, while longer expeditions (10-14 days) provide more extensive training and the opportunity to cover a variety of rivers and challenges. The length of the course also allows for deeper immersion in the sport, with ample time for hands-on practice, feedback, and refinement of techniques.

The expeditions take place on some of Nepal’s most renowned and challenging rivers, offering stunning landscapes and diverse river conditions. Possible rivers for an Extended Kayak Instruction Expedition include:

Kali Gandaki River: Known for its powerful Class III and IV rapids, the Kali Gandaki offers both scenic beauty and exciting challenges.

Seti River: A more accessible river that is perfect for building foundational skills and gaining confidence on the water.

Trishuli River: A popular river with Class II to III rapids, offering a good mix of calm sections and exciting white-water.

Sun Kosi River: One of Nepal’s classic white-water rivers, with Class IV and V rapids that are perfect for advanced kayakers looking to push their limits.

Bhote Koshi River: Famous for its steep, technical rapids, ideal for those looking to challenge themselves with intense white-water conditions.

These rivers provide a variety of conditions, ranging from beginner-friendly sections to more challenging and remote stretches, giving you the opportunity to develop your skills on different types of water.

Rapid Runner Expeditions provides all the necessary kayaking equipment, including kayaks, paddles, life jackets, and helmets. However, there are a few personal items that you should bring for comfort and safety:

Quick-drying clothing: Lightweight, moisture-wicking clothes such as T-shirts, long sleeves, and synthetic pants or shorts are ideal for kayaking.

Water shoes or sandals: Sturdy footwear that is appropriate for getting wet and walking on slippery surfaces.

Sunscreen: High-SPF sunscreen to protect your skin from sun exposure during the days on the water.

Hat and sunglasses: A wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses to protect your eyes from the sun and reduce glare off the water.

Warm clothing: Even in tropical weather, temperatures can drop at night. Bring layers for evening warmth, such as fleece or a light jacket.

Towel and dry clothes: For drying off and changing after a kayaking session.

Waterproof camera (optional): To capture the memories of your adventure while keeping your equipment safe.

Yes, safety is a top priority during the Extended Kayak Instruction Expeditions. Rapid Runner Expeditions ensures that all participants are provided with the highest quality safety gear, including life jackets, helmets, and paddles. Each expedition is led by certified and experienced kayak instructors who are trained in rescue and first aid techniques. Before heading out on the river, participants receive a detailed safety briefing, covering everything from proper kayaking techniques to emergency protocols. In addition, the company follows best practices to minimize risks and ensure that participants are well-prepared for the challenges they may face on the water.

The best time for an Extended Kayak Instruction Expedition is during Nepal’s dry season, which runs from September to May. During these months, water levels are generally stable, and weather conditions are ideal for outdoor activities like kayaking. The pre-monsoon season (March to May) offers excellent river conditions for learning and progressing in kayaking. The post-monsoon season (September to November) is also a good time, with clear skies and moderate river flows. The monsoon season (June to August) is generally avoided due to high water levels and unpredictable conditions that may pose more risks for learners.

An Extended Kayak Instruction Expedition includes:

Kayak and safety equipment: All necessary kayaking gear, including the kayak, paddles, life jacket, and helmet.

Professional instruction: Experienced and certified kayak instructors who will guide you through each day’s lessons, offering hands-on coaching and personalized feedback.

Transportation: Transport to and from the river, as well as any additional travel required for multi-day expeditions.

Meals and accommodation: Depending on the length of the expedition, meals and lodging (either camping or staying in local lodges) will be provided. The food is typically local and nutritious to keep you energized.

Safety briefings and support: Each participant receives a full safety briefing and is supported by the instructors throughout the journey.

Local exploration: For longer expeditions, there may also be opportunities for sightseeing, trekking, and exploring the surrounding areas of the river.
