Overview

The Karnali is Nepal’s longest and largest river which drains most of the far west of Nepal. The Karnali is the perfect expedition for those people who really want to escape civilisation. The area of Nepal that the river flows through is Wild and uninhabited. During the trip you will raft through some of the most pristine and un-spoilt jungle scenery in Nepal.

Our expedition starts from either Kathmandu or Pokhara, where we take a bus to Nepalgunj, and then  on to our put in on river at Dungeswar. We will be confined to the river for the next six and a half days, our journey downstream will lead us through jungle clad canyons full of class 4 rapids.

We will take out at Chisapani where will will have the option of adding on a trip to Bardia Park, one of the best kept nature reserves in Nepal, an opportunity to combine our rafting experience with a true safari experience.

The Karnali is one of the finest big volume rafting runs in Nepal, in all honesty it can only be considered as World class!

Trip Itinerary

We can start this trip from Kathmandu or Pokhara and fly to Nepalgunj where a private bus will be waiting to take us to the put in point on the river. (If your budget does not allow a flight or you would prefer to start from Pokhara then you are welcome to join our staff on the 16 hour bus journey

For the next 8 days we are on the river the whole time and will pack in some awesome wild whitewater, incredible scenery, beautiful beaches, idillic villages and quiet wildlife spotting opportunities not to mention the entertainment from our team of world class rafting and kayak guides…. you will not be disappointed. We will have one rest day along the river which gives a good chance to rest and relax before enjoying an evening BBQ and beach party! Our camps are built each night on the river beaches and always take advantage of the beautiful environment of the river. At night you can camp inside our 2 man dome tents or sleep out under a raft shelter and enjoy Nepal’s only million star hotel!! After 6 days of adrenaline pumping whitewater, during the last couple of days the river flattens out, allowing us to relax and enjoy the scenery and reflect on our adventure.

On our final day as we get ready to rejoin the rest of the world as we come to the town of Chisopani, and our take out point. We have a last lunch on the banks of the river before waving goodbye to the mighty Karnali. From the end point we can either bus or fly back to Kathmandu or if you fancy a bit more adventure (and a chance to see a Bengal Tiger) you can go on safari in the Stunningly beautiful Bhardia National Park.

Fun, fun, fun & professional

Purna and his team were unfailingly gracious and hard-working. Our run down the Karnali was great fun and without issues. I recommend then unreservedly.

Karnali with the most amazing river guides

What an adventure we had on the Karnali river with Rapidrunner Expeditions! This was a trip that was supposed to happen in 2020. but was postponed due to the pandemic. Three years later - we made it to mighty Karnali, with Birendra's most excellent team of river guides. Never had such an amazing experience. 7 nights of camping and 8 days of rafting were by far the most enjoyable part of our 1-month-long Nepal trip, although there are no complaints about anything else during our trip. Karnali is a beaut, and I wouldn't have done it with anyone else other than Rapidrunners and my 6 friends. Hoping to come back again soon. Thanks: Purna, Bibek, Waiba, Sanjay, Saila, and Birendra

The Karnali River Rafting Expedition is one of the most exhilarating and remote white-water rafting experiences in Nepal. This 10-day adventure takes you along the mighty Karnali River, which flows through some of the most pristine and rugged landscapes in the country. Known for its challenging Class IV and V rapids, the Karnali offers a thrilling combination of technical rapids, serene stretches, and breathtaking views of the Himalayas, deep valleys, and lush forests. The expedition is perfect for those looking to immerse themselves in a multi-day rafting adventure, with opportunities to explore remote areas that are inaccessible by road.

The 10-day Karnali River Rafting Expedition is designed for intermediate to advanced rafters who have previous rafting experience and are in good physical condition. The rapids on the Karnali range from Class IV to V, meaning participants should be comfortable navigating fast-moving, technical, and challenging white-water. If you have a strong sense of adventure, are physically fit, and have basic kayaking or rafting experience, this trip is for you. The minimum age for participants is generally 16 years old, though exceptions can be made based on experience and fitness level.

The Karnali River is famous for its Class IV and V rapids, making it one of the most thrilling and challenging rafting rivers in Nepal. The rapids are fast-moving and powerful, with several large waves, drops, and narrow channels. Some of the most famous rapids on the Karnali River include "God's House", "The Big Brother", and "Dhole Ghat". These rapids require excellent teamwork, swift maneuvering, and good decision-making skills. However, between these intense rapids, there are also calmer sections, providing moments of relaxation where you can take in the stunning surroundings. The Karnali is an ideal river for those who want to experience the thrill of rafting in challenging conditions.

As the name suggests, the 10-day Karnali River Rafting Expedition spans a period of 10 days. This includes 8 days on the river itself, with 2 days for transportation to and from the river. The rafting portion of the trip covers a distance of about 180 kilometers (112 miles), offering ample time to navigate the river, enjoy the scenery, and take breaks at various campsites. Each day involves approximately 5-7 hours of rafting, depending on the flow of the river and the rapids encountered. The expedition includes overnight camping on the riverbanks, where you'll sleep under the stars in the midst of nature.

Rapid Runner Expeditions provides all necessary rafting equipment, such as kayaks, paddles, life jackets, helmets, and rafts. However, participants are advised to bring the following personal items to ensure comfort and safety:

Quick-drying clothing: Lightweight, moisture-wicking clothes such as synthetic T-shirts, shorts, or swimsuits are ideal.

Water shoes: Sturdy footwear that provides grip and protection when walking in the water and on rocky riverbanks.

Sunscreen: High-SPF sunscreen to protect your skin from sun exposure.

Hat and sunglasses: A wide-brimmed hat and polarized sunglasses to protect your face and eyes from the sun.

Towel and extra clothing: A towel for drying off, as well as a set of dry clothes for after rafting each day.

Warm clothing: Even in tropical weather, temperatures can drop at night. A fleece jacket or light layers will help keep you warm during the cooler evenings.

Personal medications: Any personal medications or first-aid items you may need during the trip.

Waterproof camera or phone case (optional): To capture the stunning views and memorable moments along the river while keeping your electronics safe from water.

Water bottle: Staying hydrated is essential, so bring a reusable water bottle to carry fresh water during the trip.

Yes, safety is a top priority during the Karnali River Rafting Expedition. Rapid Runner Expeditions ensures all participants are equipped with high-quality safety gear, including life jackets, helmets, and rafts. Before starting the expedition, all participants receive a thorough safety briefing that covers rafting techniques, group dynamics, and emergency protocols. The trip is led by experienced and certified rafting guides who are trained in water rescue, first aid, and CPR. In addition, each rafting group includes safety kayakers who can assist in emergencies. While the Karnali River has challenging rapids, the guides are well-prepared and will ensure everyone’s safety and enjoyment throughout the trip.

The best time to go on the Karnali River Rafting Expedition is during Nepal’s dry season, which runs from September to May. This is when the water levels are more stable, and the weather conditions are favorable for outdoor adventure. The ideal months are generally October to December and March to May, as these months offer moderate water levels and clear skies, ensuring the best conditions for rafting. January and February can also be a good time for those looking for a less crowded experience, but temperatures can be colder, especially in the evenings. The monsoon season (June to August) is avoided due to high water levels, which can make the river more dangerous and difficult to navigate.

The 10-Day Karnali River Rafting Expedition includes:

Rafting equipment: All necessary equipment, including life jackets, helmets, paddles, and rafts.

Guides and safety support: Experienced rafting guides who are experts in river navigation and safety, as well as safety kayakers for assistance.
